My Life to Live

I, Cringely: Resistance is Futile. "Same with movie piracy, which needs a strong movie industry from which to steal. If the industry is weakened too much by piracy, the pirates begin to hurt themselves by drying-up their source of material. It is very doubtful that this will happen simply because the pirates, too, want to go to movies.. Back to music and text publishing. Expect both industries to offer peer-to-peer systems that won't work very well, and will cost us something instead of nothing. In the long run, though, these systems will probably die, too, at which point, the music and the print folks will have to find another way to make their livings. This will not be because of piracy, but because of the origination of material within the peer-to-peer culture, itself. We're not that far from a time when artists and writers can distribute their own work and make a living doing so, which makes the current literary and music establishments a lot less necessary."

Popular Science: Massive Attack. "Once created, Massive characters are inserted into unpopulated scenes. The characters are then left to do what they've been created to do, and a battle scene assembles itself. This can take minutes, or overnight, depending on the size and complexity of the scene. Beyond general tendencies, the filmmaker does not know precisely what a character will do, since each is an autonomous and, within the confines of the digital landscape, sentient being. Regelous' laptop still contains an early sequence in which a pair of fighters—an Orc and a human—began a strange dance borne of too-finely balanced combat and obstacle avoidance modules. The digital opponents approach, circle and brandish weapons, but never clash. In another early simulation, Jackson and Regelous watched as several thousand characters fought like hell while, in the background, a small contingent of combatants seemed to think better of it and run away. They weren't programmed to do this. It just happened. "It was spooky," Jackson said in an interview last year."

The 7th PIFF is drawing near the end and I'm ready to depart this beloved cinema city by the sea. I've been walking by Haewoondae beach every day to work at the film festival and I'll miss it dearly, not just its people and celebrities. So many memories and so much fun, including so much excitement and the hope for next year... incredible experience I will cherish for the rest of my life. I hope to make it next year, again. I will recount the experience in this blog after I get back to the states. Until then...

PIFF Starts Today!

The festival started but my part is yet to start. We are a bit away from the main festival ground that it hardly feels "festive" yet. However, the guests are arriving one by one, and there will opening party soon with many famous people from all over Korea & Asia, including my favorite actresses. :-D It's gonna be fun. I'm already having a ball.
